Cottrell’s walk-off single in the seventh moves Leopards on to NJCAA JUCO Softball D-I CWS quarterfinals

The Temple College Leopards played their first game of the 2026 National Junior College Athletic Association Division I College World Series on Tuesday afternoon as they took on the College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama.

Reese Cottrell's bottom of the seventh inning, two-out line drive to centerfield scored Brooklyn Walton, who three batters earlier to set the table for the game-winner as Temple College knocked off CSI, 4-3.

The game started as pitching duel between Izzy Garcia and CSI's Marissa Mauger.

Temple broke through in the bottom of the third. With one out, Walton singled and advanced to third on Lexi Dudeczka's infield single. A pitcher later Dudeczka and Walton pulled off a double steal attempt where the throw went past third base and into left field to score Walton. Moments later with two outs, Cottrell singled home Dudeczka to put Temple up 2-0.

Following a one-out single by Kyli Carrell and with two outs, Jade Romero hit a towering blast over the centerfield fence to tie at game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth,

Walton scored on Jasmine Benavidez's double in the bottom of the fifth to put Temple back out front, 3-2.

 

Anslie Yazzie's double started the start the top of the seven. Sarah Bliss' sacrifice bunt moved Yazzie to third and Maile Ha'o's sacrifice fly scored Yazzie to tie the game 3-3.

With one out in bottom of the seventh, Walton hit the seventh pitch she faced into the right field corner and circled bases for a triple and put the winning runner on third. Dudeczka drew an eight-pitch walk. With two outs, Cottrell blasted a shot to centerfield to score Walton and clinched the 4-3 win.

The Leopards collected eight hits on the afternoon, led by Walton's three, and Dudeczka and Cottrell with two hits each. Walton scored three of Temple's four tallies.

Garcia picked up the win, as he pitched bookends of the game for five complete innings, allowed two runs on five hits and struck out four. Cottrell pitched 1 1/3 relief innings, allowed one run on one hit, and struck out two. Kat Kram pitched 2/3 of an inning and walked two.

Yazzie collected two of CSI's six hits.

Mauger did not factor in the decision, having pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowed three runs on six hits and walked four. Emma Farrell took the loss, allowed one run on two hits, a walk, and struck out two.

With the win, Temple will take out Seminole State at Field 2 at Choccolocco Park on Wednesday at 1 pm. With the loss, the Golden Eagles played Wabash Valley late Tuesday afternoon.
