Total team effort lifts Temple to Southwest District B Championship over Grayson

The No. 4 Temple College Leopards and No. 9 Grayson College Vikings squared off for the second time in the NJCAA Southwest B District Tournament on Friday afternoon at the Danny Scott Sports Complex. This time, a championship and automatic bid to the NJCAA Division I Softball College World Series in Oxford, Alabama, hung in the balance.

Kat Kram hurled a complete game four-hitter, and Kaiyah Ratu and Marli Kennedy each drove in two runs as the Leopards continued their home dominance with a 6-0 over Grayson.

Temple (53-6) will find out their pairing on Tuesday evening during the NJCAA World Series Bracket Show at 5 pm on the NJCAA Network.

Grayson (47-12) will wait to find out if they will be awarded one of the four at-large bids.

The Leopards hit the scoreboard in the first inning. With two outs, Ratu's single to left field scored Jasmine Benavidez.

Grayson had singles in each of the first three innings. Ratu threw Addisyn Cox out stealing in the top of the second to keep Kram's shutout intact.

Temple rallied for four runs in the fourth inning. Ratu homered over the centerfield fence to double the Leopards' lead to 2-0. Kennedy tripled home Angie DeLeon, Brooklyn Walton singled in Kennedy, and Benavides singled home Walton to put Temple up, 5-0.

Kennedy added an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth that scored Jessica Reyes.

Kram handled things in the circle expertly, as she allowed just one hit after the third. She picked up the seven-inning, complete-game win. She tossed seven innings, allowed four hits, struck out eight and walked three.

Ratu, DeLeon, Kennedy, and Benavidez each had two hits in Temple's ten-hit output.

Matti Matthews had two of Grayson's four hits.

Riley Mays picked up the loss in the circle. She allowed four runs on five hits and struck out four in 3 2/3 innings. Carolyn Koval pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowed two runs on five hits, struck out one, and walked one. Natalie Moreaux pitched one inning and walked one.

TC will head to the NJCAA College World Series on a 14-game winning streak, with nine of the wins coming against nationally ranked opponents. The Leopards have won 24 of their last 25 games, and 41 of their last 43.
