TC Softball to conclude NTJCAC regular season with trip to Vernon

TC Softball to conclude NTJCAC regular season with trip to Vernon

The No. 4 Temple College Leopards will play their final two North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference road games on Saturday afternoon, as they will take on Vernon College.

The doubleheader first pitch is slated for noon CT.

Temple and Vernon are coming off a grueling doubleheader this past Tuesday, which saw the Leopards win 4-0 and 1-0 (nine innings) to improve to 28-2 in conference play and 48-6 overall.

The 27-1 home mark (.964 winning percentage) is one of the best in the 28 years of the program. Their 16-0 home conference mark set a new standard for the Leopards.

And the list of accomplishments for the Leopards this season could have two more team marks with a doubleheader sweep: 30 conference wins and 50 "regular season" wins. TC has had teams win 50-plus games in a season. However, those records included playoff games.

TC is hitting .391 with a .458 on-base percentage, have scored 453 runs on 568 hits, 202 of which have been for extra bases (119 doubles, 30 triples, 53 home runs), 405 runs batted in, have drawn 165 walks, been hit by 39 pitches, and have stolen 198 bases.

With the back-to-back shutouts over 16 innings tossed by Izzy Garcia and Kat Kram on Tuesday, the Leopards pitching staff dropped their earned run average from 2.20 to 2.09.

Temple continues to lead the nation in team defense, having committed just 24 errors in 1,233 chances for a .981 fielding percentage. The Leopards average an error once in every 51.4 chances.

Vernon (28-24 overall, 14-16 NTJCAC, 17-7) hits .283 with an on-base percentage of .340. The Chaparrals have scored 245 runs on 373 hits, have 100 extra-base hits (66 doubles, 19 triples, 15 homers), drawn 106 walks, and have 78 stolen bases on 93 attempts.

With having allowed just five runs to the Leopards, the Chaparrals dropped their staff ERA from 3.93 to 3.66.

Vernon has committed 101 errors in 1,394 total chances (.928 fielding percentage).

Following Saturday's action, the Leopards will host the Southwest "B" District Softball Tournament starting Wednesday at the Danny Scott Sports Complex.
