The Temple College Leopards and Vernon College Chaparrals moved their Saturday doubleheader at the Danny Scott Sports Complex to Friday due to impending inclement weather this weekend.
Having played through the windy conditions, the Leopards got plenty of offense and a no-hitter from Joseph McMurtry in a doubleheader sweep of the Chaparrals.
Game scores were 10-0 (five innings) and 5-4.
The Leopards improved to 12-10 on the season and 3-1 in North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference play.
McMurtry fanned two Chaps in the first inning to set the Leopards tone.
Back-to-back walks to Cameron Bartz and Hunter Baros, along with a sacrifice bunt by Kade Davis, set up Chase Fricke's three-run blast over the right field wall to give Temple a 3-0 lead.
McMurtry worked himself out of a one-out jam in the top of the second after hitting Benito Bonilla with a pitch and issuing a walk to Josnel Ortiz. McMurtry struck out Evan Dugdale and Rex Rambo to get out the of the inning.
A two-out Vernon error allowed Wade Stallones to advance to second base. Bartz's single brought home Stallones to increase Temple's lead to 4-0. Following a walk to Baros, Davis drilled a fastpitch over the right field wall to add to Temple's lead, 7-0.
Fricke added a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to put the Leopards out front, 8-0.
McMurtry retired the final 11 batters that he faced.
With one out in the fifth, walks to Stallones and Bartz, and Baros was hit by a pith to load the bases. Davis smacked a 1-0 pitch to right field to score Stallones and Bartz to end the game on a walk-off hit in run-rule fashion.
Temple collected six hits and six walk in the game. Davis went 2-for-2 with a homer and five RBI, Fricke went 1-for-1 with a sacrifice fly and four RBI, and Bartz went 2-for-2 with four runs scored, two walks, and an RBI.
McMurtry needed just 60 pitches in five innings for the win. He dealt five innings, struck out nine, walked one, and hit a batter.
Jackson Wilkerson took the loss for Vernon, having pitched four innings, allowed eight runs (four earned) on five hits, walked four, hit two batters, and struck out two. Devin Ryan pitched 1/3 inning, allowed two runs on one hit, and walked two.
Temple took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game two when Fricke tripled in Stallones and Baros singled in Fricke.
Davis cruised through the first three innings before having run into trouble in the top of the fourth. Bonilla doubled home Irvin Leonard and Jayden Lusk to give the Chaparral a 3-2 lead.
Vernon added to their lead in the fifth when Leonard homered over the left field fence to extend the advantage to 4-2.
Aden Redlich took over in the fifth and held Vernon off the board in the sixth.
Kanyon Millar singled in the bottom of the sixth to pull the Leopards back to within a run. Stallones' triple down the left field line scored Yarel Delgado and Kash Millar. Stallones attempted to score on an overthrow, but was tagged out at the plate to end the inning.
Landon Miller took over in the top of the seventh and pitched three scoreless innings to seal the win.
The Leopards picked nine hits and four walks, led by Stallones and Elias Leon-Padilla with two hits. Stallones added two RBI, and Kanyon Millar, Fricke, and Baros all added a run batted in.
Davis pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowed four runs on five hits, struck out three and walked two. Redlich pitched 1 1/3 innings and struck out one. Miller pitched three innings, allowed two hits and struck out three.
Kyu Lums picked up no decision for the Chaparral, having pitched five innings, allowed two runs on five hits, struck out eight and walked two. Brigham Brown took the loss in relief, as he pitched three innings, allowed three runs on four hits, walked two and struck out one.
The Leopards pitching staff held the Chaparrals offense hitless for the first seven innings of the doubleheader before Leonards' single to start third inning of game two.
Temple will take on North Central Texas College in NTJCAC play with doubleheaders on Wednesday (March 11) in Gainesville and on Saturday (March 14) at the Danny Scott Sports Complex.
